Planning Your Safari
Planning an African hunting safari should be exciting, not stressful. From the moment you confirm your booking, Shammah Safaris will guide you through the preparation process, including travel planning, hunting requirements, accommodation, firearms information, trophy handling, and arrival arrangements.

Clothing, Firearms & Ammunition
Accommodation
Zimbabwe hunting conditions can vary depending on the season, hunting area, and species being pursued. Comfortable, practical clothing is recommended.

Laundry is normally available in camp, so there is no need to overpack. Soft bags are recommended because they are easier to transport than hard suitcases.
Firearms & Ammunition
Hunters are welcome to bring their own rifle into Zimbabwe, provided the correct travel documents, airline requirements, and temporary firearm import procedures are followed. Many hunters prefer using their own rifle because it gives them confidence and familiarity in the field.
Before travelling, clients should check their own country’s firearm export requirements, airline firearm policy, and any transit-country regulations. On arrival in Zimbabwe, firearms and ammunition must be declared, and the relevant paperwork must be completed.
Popular Calibres
For plains game, common calibres include:
- .270
- .30-06 Springfield
- .308
- .300 Win Mag
For leopard, buffalo, elephant, and other dangerous game, heavier calibres are required. The .375 H&H is widely accepted as a minimum calibre for dangerous game, while larger calibres such as .416 Rigby may also be suitable.
Clients should bring quality ammunition suitable for the species being hunted. Ammunition must match the declared firearm calibre.
Our safari camps are designed to provide comfort while keeping the authentic feeling of the African bush. Guests can expect clean accommodation, good meals, reliable camp support, and warm Zimbabwean hospitality.
Depending on the hunting area and safari package, accommodation may include comfortable safari rooms, private bathrooms, dining areas, electricity or generator power, and camp staff to assist with daily needs.
After a long day in the field, camp provides a relaxed place to rest, share the day’s experience, and prepare for the next hunt.
Trophy Preparation & Shipping
After your safari, trophies are handled with care and professionally prepared before being transferred to an approved taxidermist or shipping agent.
Shammah Safaris works with experienced professionals to assist with skinning, salting, dipping, packing, documentation, and trophy export procedures. Taxidermy, dipping, packing, shipping, and related export costs are normally the responsibility of the client unless otherwise stated in the quotation.
Clients may also choose to use their preferred taxidermist or shipping agent.

Zimbabwe offers excellent hunting opportunities across different parts of the season. Conditions change throughout the year, and each period has its own advantages.

Shammah Safaris conducts ethical, free-range hunting. We do not conduct canned hunts.

Most international clients fly into Harare or Victoria Falls, depending on the hunting area and final safari arrangements.

Health & Safety
Your safety is a priority throughout the safari. Clients should be physically prepared for walking, tracking, and long days outdoors, especially on dangerous game hunts.
We recommend that clients:
- Travel with medical insurance
- Bring personal medication
- Consult their doctor about malaria precautions
- Stay hydrated during hot months
- Use sunscreen and insect repellent
- Inform the PH of any medical conditions before the hunt
Bottled or safe drinking water is available in camp, and basic first-aid support is available during the safari.
FAQs
Do I need a visa to visit Zimbabwe?
Visa requirements depend on your nationality, passport, and travel route. Some visitors may qualify for visa-free entry, some may obtain a visa on arrival, while others may need to apply before travelling.
Clients should check the latest requirements with the relevant Zimbabwean authorities, their nearest Zimbabwean embassy or consulate, and their airline before departure. Shammah Safaris can assist with general guidance, but it remains the client’s responsibility to ensure all entry requirements are met
Can I bring my own rifle?
Yes. Zimbabwe allows hunters to temporarily bring in their own rifles, provided the correct documentation is completed and the firearm and ammunition are declared on arrival.
Clients must also check their own country’s firearm export rules, airline firearm policy, and any transit-country requirements. Ammunition brought into Zimbabwe should be declared and accounted for on departure.
What is included in the safari?
Inclusions depend on the package and written quotation. A typical safari may include professional hunter services, accommodation, meals, field staff, trackers, skinners, hunting vehicle use, and airport transfers where agreed.
Trophy fees, government levies, taxidermy, dipping, packing, shipping, firearm permits, visa costs, flights, insurance, and personal expenses are normally charged separately unless clearly stated in the quotation.
Can observers come on safari?
Yes. Observers are welcome by prior arrangement. Many clients travel with family members or friends who want to experience the African bush without hunting. Observer rates and accommodation arrangements should be confirmed during booking.
Are trophy fees included in the daily rate?
Usually, daily rates and trophy fees are charged separately unless otherwise stated. Trophy fees are payable for animals successfully taken or wounded. Final pricing and payment terms will be confirmed in the written quotation.
Is the hunting free-range?
Yes. Shammah Safaris focuses on free-range hunting in natural African wildlife areas. Hunts are conducted ethically, with respect for fair chase, safety, and responsible trophy selection.
